Watch & learn: 9 reasons to work in an AWS data center
From inclusive environments to a culture of innovation, learn from AWS builders around the world how data center careers are leading to new experiences in the cloud.
By the Life at AWS team
Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers power computing and data storage capacity for thousands of cloud customers around the world. These highly secure, temperature-controlled facilities house the servers, networking equipment, and other critical hardware our customers rely on.
From those exploring cloud computing for the first time to people honing and extending their technical skills, AWS data centers provide a wide range of opportunities where employees can learn, innovate, and advance their careers in this growing industry.
We spoke to nine employees across all levels in AWS data centers around the world to learn more about this exciting field, what surprised them most, and how working in an AWS data center presents new opportunities for their careers. Watch below for 9 reasons to work in an AWS data center.
1. No technical experience required
"I had no data center experience at all prior to my internship. My day-to-day is that I'm kind of everywhere. One day I could be doing install, another day I could be dealing with racks, the next day I could be shadowing other teams to get more knowledge. My team and my manager in AWS are definitely supportive of my growth. ... I definitely see this job as a starting point to another career at Amazon."
Aaliyah
AWS data center install technician
2. Inclusive environments
"There are so many opportunities for multiple different types of people, with different backgrounds, to work in data centers."
Fiona
AWS data center construction manager
3. Part of something bigger
"Equity, diversity, and inclusion is very important for Amazon. I joined the Black Employee Network because it's important to be a part of something that feels bigger than you."
Inès
AWS data center security specialist
4. Exciting work environments
"We are the data protectors and gatekeepers. It's fun working with a team coming from different backgrounds, offering different ideas. We work with customers from all walks of life and industries, so it's important to understand our customers' needs. If you're looking to step into an exciting career in the world of cloud, looking to work in a global environment, you ought to join the AWS data center team!"
Aki
AWS data center manager
5. Endless learning
"Before AWS, I was a professional handball player for so many years. I thought it was a great idea to create a new career path, that's when I saw the internship program at AWS and I went for it. My biggest surprise since I joined AWS is the diversity in the company — the people, the culture. My team has also been very supportive and approachable, and helps me grow and expand my knowledge. Every day at AWS is a new day and you learn so many things."
Gabriela
AWS installation technician
6. Support for career growth
"I started off with an internship, which was 90 days. I started off within the data center, and I actually had no previous technical experience besides being able to work on a computer. ... AWS 100% invested in me. They (supported my education) at a community college for a couple of months, with nothing coming out-of-pocket from me. I have not had any type of resources at other jobs that AWS has been investing in their employees."
Kordell Williams
AWS data center engineer operation technician
7. A new world of opportunities
"The FC to DC (fulfillment center to data center) program helps you transition from that fulfillment center background to the data center day-to-day. AWS will invest in you—they'll pay for you to go to school, pay for you to get certified. I'm thinking about dabbling and getting a degree in web design on Amazon's dollar, and they'll pay for those classes. If they're investing in you, you might as well invest in yourself. There are so many opportunities out here that I did not know about until I joined AWS. Here, you can go anywhere."
Theo
AWS inventory control quality assurance specialist
8. Pace of innovation
"The biggest surprise when I joined AWS is our Day One culture. Within AWS, what I've found is that when you add value to a process, you innovate and you put energy into it, you see that tangible, physical return faster than you would in a normal corporate environment."
Christina
AWS regional lead for Edge services sites across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and core data centers in South Africa
9. Global culture
"If you think of AWS and Amazon, our number of employees, you can compare it to the population of some countries. This huge culture is very interesting—you have the opportunity to talk with other employees from other parts of the world, to ask for support, help, or even just to chat."
Lara
AWS logistics manager
