adidas Reduces SAP HANA Database Recovery Time by 59% with Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP

Founded in 1949 in Germany, adidas is a global athletic apparel and footwear corporation with more than $22 billion in yearly revenue.

Challenge: Seeking to transform its global operations, adidas is consolidating and automating its core SAP enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, transitioning from disparate legacy systems. The company faces the critical task of ensuring robust and reliable backup and recovery for its integral SAP HANA databases. The key challenge is to centralize and simplify its SAP S/4HANA ERP systems while meeting stringent data backup and storage recovery requirements. This is essential to minimize downtime and protect against data loss in their vast, high-transaction environment

Solution: This project to consolidate adidas's legacy SAP systems will be one of the largest SAP S/4HANA installations in the world. The AWS infrastructure to power this extensive environment includes Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances to run the large-scale, data-intensive HANA databases, and Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, which provides fully managed, resilient, high performance storage. The integration of FSx for ONTAP into Adidas SAP HANA environment has significantly enhanced their database backup and recovery processes, reducing data recovery times by 59%, which enables Adidas to greatly exceed its service-level agreement mandate. Ultimately, adidas aims to operate an SAP S/4HANA on AWS environment exceeding 40 TB, a goal now within reach.

We want to be cutting edge. We understand that we are hitting records on AWS in instance sizes, volume size, processing speed, memory, and CPUs. We see the sheer speed of the infrastructure, allowing us to restart and restore the system in an impressive amount of time.

Dominik Meier, Senior Director of Platform Engineering at adidas
  • Arm Ltd

Arm Scales Performance for Chip Design Using Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP

Founded in 1990, Arm Limited is a semiconductor and software design company based in the United Kingdom. It designs energy-efficient CPU and GPU processors and system-on-a-chip infrastructure and software

Challenge: The chip design process at Arm is intensive, relying on electronic-design-automation (EDA) workloads involve billions of files with extensive metadata operations. The ‘spiky’ nature of these workloads—characterized by fluctuating compute demands—leads to periods of underutilization or insufficient compute capacity. This variability impacted the efficiency of its on-premises EDA operations, Arm needed to scale its compute and storage resources to accelerate the design process.

Solution: Arm has NetApp ONTAP storage systems in its on-premises data center, and looked to integrate Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP into a hybrid cloud setup to address the ‘spiky’ compute demands. FSx for ONTAP enables Arm to leverage a hybrid cloud infrastructure configured as an in-cloud cache for Arm’s on-premises ONTAP filers using NetApp FlexCache volumes. Arm can now burst EDA workloads to AWS to improve scalability and processing speeds—seeing a reduction in job completion times by 50%. In addition, Arm is experiencing increased throughput and lower latency by adopting FSx for ONTAP scale-out file systems—delivering up to 12x pairs of file servers—to access tens of petabytes of data and handle over 10 million jobs.

Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP is a game changer for us, we intend to keep pushing its boundaries. This hybrid approach has accelerated our chip-design process, improving our speed to market and enabling us to handle massive data and file demands seamlessly.

David Miller, Senior Director and Fellow in IT Architecture at Arm.

  • Inventum

Inventum Boosts SAP HANA Efficiency with Transition to FSx for ONTAP

Inventum Technologies, founded in 1908, is a Dutch renewable energy semiconductor manufacturing firm with a focus on heat pumps, boilers, and balance ventilation. The company is recognized as a pioneer in ventilation heat pumps.

Challenge: Facing growth and the construction of a new production facility, Inventum needed its SAP S/4HANA systems to reliably support this expansion. Operational inefficiencies and rising costs for their hosted cloud-based solution prompted the company to seek a more effective system. Inventum faced inefficiencies with only two SAP HANA environments—one for production and another combining development and testing. This longstanding setup hindered operations, prompting the company to overhaul of their SAP landscape.

Solution: Inventum consulted with myBrand Conclusion, their managed service provider, to replace their cloud SAP environment with AWS, utilizing Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP—a certified storage system for SAP HANA. This shift to SAP S/4HANA on AWS enhanced their operational performance, reliability, and agility, enabling three distinct environments: production, development, and quality assurance. The production file system is running in one filesystem and is SnapMirrored to a secondary file system in hours, not days, for disaster recovery together with the development and quality assurance systems. Inventum gains cost and storage efficiencies through data tiering, compression, and deduplication. Faster data recovery is achieved using NetApp's SnapCenter backup service for data protection, cloning, and replication. This transition has not only reduced costs but is also optimized for their SAP HANA storage needs, supporting seamless high availability, backup, and disaster recovery.

The transition to AWS, managed by myBrand Conclusion, not only addressed our immediate operational challenges but also set us up for future growth, stated Jan van Lit, IT Coordinator at Inventum. “This SAP HANA environment with FSx for ONTAP is more cost-efficient than our previous options. The ability to swiftly set up exact copies with SnapMirror of our SAP environments has drastically improved our team's efficiency. With FSx for ONTAP, we are ready for the future with our SAP environment on AWS.

Jan van Lit, IT Coordinator at Inventum
