Derived from BSD, the version of UNIX developed at the University of California, Berkeley, FreeBSD has been continually developed by a large community for more than 30 years. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size, from small burstable types like t2.nano and t3.micro to memory-optimized, compute-optimized, storage-optimized, and bare-metal instances. What does one hourly unit map to for FreeBSD 14 (ZFS)?
Each dimension maps to one specific AWS EC2 instance type running for one hour. The rate reflects that instance's compute, memory, and storage capacity. You pick one instance type, and billing counts each hour that instance runs. Running two instances of the same type accrues two hours per clock hour.
Am I charged the hourly rate when my instance is stopped?
The software rate meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes while stopped. Charges resume when you restart the instance. Since FreeBSD itself is free, all cost ties to running instance-hours.
Do I commit upfront, or is this pay-as-you-go?
This is pay-as-you-go. There is no upfront commitment. Billing accrues per hour for each instance you run. You can switch to a different instance type whenever your workload changes, and the rate adjusts to the new instance's hourly price. You pay only for the hours used.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
This AMI launches with sshd running and the SSH public key you provide at launch time allowed to log in as ec2-user with passwordless "su" to root. To use this AMI, ensure that your EC2 security group allows SSH (tcp/22) from your location, and then "ssh ec2-user@<Instance IP address>".

I needed a quick VM in the cloud to do some network performance testing. I first tried Amazon's tutorial for a Linux AMI, so I could be sure I understood the steps for a successful install as I was unfamiliar with EC2. After which, I grabbed this FreeBSD AMI, hit the EC2 console and was operational in a few minutes.
