As licensing costs increased ahead of an upcoming hypervisor license renewal, Service Stream saw an opportunity to move its business-critical applications from VMC on AWS to native AWS services. The migration would help improve cost efficiency, strengthen operational visibility, and provide long-term flexibility for workloads supporting essential infrastructure services.
An earlier migration effort had been delayed because Service Stream lacked a clear understanding of its application landscape and dependencies, while limited documentation across legacy systems added complexity to migration planning. Coupled with these challenges, the upcoming license renewal created a defined timeline for the project. To move forward, the company needed a faster, more accurate way to assess dependencies, sequence workloads, and minimize disruption to critical applications.
Solution | Meeting the renewal deadline with AWS expertise and Agentic AI
Service Stream worked with AWS Partner SourceFuse, a specialist in cloud migrations and modernization, to complete the migration within a fixed timeline. As a launch partner for AWS Transform, an agentic AI service for cloud migration and modernization, SourceFuse used the service to accelerate the transition of VMware workloads to AWS native services while reducing migration risk.
“The migration involved significant complexity,” says Joseph Zhang, VMC migration project manager at Service Stream. “But SourceFuse showed genuine commitment and a willingness to provide after-hours support to help us meet our timeline.”
Service Stream adopted AWS Transform to assess its environment and gain a clearer view of its server estate. Traditionally, VMware migrations relied heavily on manual effort, including document reviews, server inventory collection, application dependency mapping, and workload sequencing. With AWS Transform, specialized AI agents automated these tasks across approximately 107 virtual servers, including Microsoft SQL Server databases and 30 terabytes of provisioned storage.
The agents mapped application interdependencies, recommended right-sized Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances for each workload, and generated an optimized migration plan spanning 14 migration waves. By grouping tightly coupled applications based on dependency analysis and business criticality, Service Stream planned and executed migrations more efficiently while reducing coordination overhead and migration risk.
After a pilot validated connectivity, security, reliability, and application performance on native Amazon EC2 instances, Service Stream completed the migration of all workloads. SourceFuse installed migration agents, set up continuous syncing, and supported testing and final cutover.

Using AWS Transform, Service Stream automated key tasks such as application discovery, dependency mapping, and migration planning, teams executed the migration with greater precision while focusing on validation and business-critical decisions.
By moving to a single cloud platform, Service Stream improved visibility into IT costs and reduced dependencies on intermediary platforms, while reducing cloud operating costs by 15 percent. The company also benefited from a zero-cost migration funded by AWS, helping reduce upfront costs and accelerate planning.
