AWS Direct Connect now offers flat-rate pricing — a simplified, predictable billing model for dedicated connections. With flat-rate pricing, you pay a fixed hourly rate for your connection based on bandwidth and pricing tier, with no per-gigabyte data transfer out (DTO) charges. A pricing tier is group of data transfer paths Flat-rate pricing is available alongside the existing pay-as-you-go model, giving you the flexibility to choose the billing approach that best fits your workload. Flat-rate connections are billed in one-hour increments, rounded up to the nearest hour. There are no per-gigabyte data transfer out charges for Regions included in your selected pricing tier. Direct Connect port-hour charges apply based on your selected bandwidth.that share similar geographic distance.
Understanding port-pairs
AWS Direct Connect flat-rate pricing introduces the concept of port-pairs. A port-pair builds provides you a resilient architecture without have to design it yourself. A port-pair is two dedicated Direct Connect ports, provisioned on different devices or locations and the same pricing tier. One port carries your traffic and the other stands by for redundancy, so if one port becomes unavailable — for example, during an outage or a maintenance window — your connection stays up through the redundant port. The usable capacity purchased is defined by the capacity of a single port, the second port in a port-pair exists solely for redundancy. For example, a 10 Gbps port-pair at any Direct Connect location gives you an effective usable capacity of 10 Gbps, not 20 Gbps. The redundant port protects your connection; it does not double your throughput.
Existing individual connections provisioned on different devices can be paired into a qualifying port-pair by adding them to a Resiliency Group. To learn more about Resiliency Groups, refer to user guide.
If you do not want a port-pair, you can create individual connections instead, assign each one the flat-rate billing mode and a pricing tier, and leave them out of a Resiliency Group. This allows you to deploy two full-bandwidth connections independently. These connections are billed at the same flat rate cost for their tier, but do not include the built-in redundancy of a port-pair.
How It Works
When you create a Direct Connect connection, you choose:
- Location — The DX location where your connection is provisioned.
- Bandwidth — The port speed for your connection.
- Billing mode — Either pay-as-you-go or flat-rate.
If you select flat-rate, you also need to choose a pricing tier that determines which AWS Regions are covered at no additional data transfer cost from that DX location.
Pricing Tiers
Flat-rate pricing uses five tiers (Tier 1 through Tier 5). Each tier includes zero data transfer out charges for traffic between your DX location and one or more AWS Regions.

AWS Direct Connect flat-rate pricing
To select the right flat-rate pricing tier, identify your source AWS regions (where your Amazon VPC traffic originates) and the Direct Connect location (where your port is provisioned). Once you identify the tier from the table below, look up the price by your desired bandwidth.
Tip: If your workloads span multiple Regions, choose the tier that covers all of them. Higher tiers include all Region paths from lower tiers.
For traffic originating from an AWS Region that is not included in your selected pricing tier, that usage is billed at standard Direct Connect data transfer rates.

Key considerations when selecting a pricing tier
A Direct Connect connection can connect to resources that span multiple AWS Regions using Direct Connect Gateways (DXGWs) and AWS Cloud WAN. Because these resources can route traffic to more than one AWS Region, attaching them to a flat-rate connection may result in traffic flowing to Regions not covered by your selected pricing tier. Hence, when you attach a multi-Region resource to your connection, review your pricing tier to confirm it includes all AWS Regions that you wish to cover under flat-rate pricing. If traffic is routed to a Region outside your pricing tier, that usage is billed at standard Direct Connect data transfer rates.
Flat-rate pricing covers private and public traffic. Transit and AWS SiteLink traffic are not covered by any pricing tier and are billed at standard rates.
Pricing Example – Single Region Workload
You created an AWS Direct Connect flat-rate port-pair at the Direct Connect location in Equinix DC2, Ashburn (Northern VA) with 10 Gbps bandwidth. You attached your VPC in AWS US East (N. Virginia) us-east-1 to a Direct Connect Gateway via a Virtual Private Gateway and configured routing to send traffic over the port to your on-premises network.
Since both your source AWS Region (US East N. Virginia us-east-1) and your port’s local metro (IAD) are the same, you should select Tier 1 pricing. For a 10 Gbps port-pair at Tier 1, the list rate is $10.96 per hour. Over a full month (730 hours), this results in a charge of $8,000.07 ($10.96 × 730 hours) — regardless of how many gigabytes you transfer, because a flat-rate port-pair has no separate per-GB data transfer charge.

Pricing Example – Multi-Region Workload
You created an AWS Direct Connect flat-rate port pair at the Direct Connect location in San Francisco (SFO) with 100 Gbps bandwidth. You attached the port-pair to a Direct Connect Gateway to connect to your VPCs in both us-east-1 (N. Virginia) and eu-central-1 (Frankfurt). Your workloads in both Regions can now send traffic through the SFO port-pair.
Your flat-rate pricing should be determined by the source-to-destination pairing in your topology that you want to cover as part of flat-rate pricing. The SFO↔IAD pairing (from us-east-1) is Tier 2, and the SFO↔FRA pairing (from eu-central-1) is Tier 3. If your SFO↔FRA data transfer volume is not very high, you could select the pricing tier of Tier 2 to cover SFO↔IAD, which is the bulk of your traffic and then pay standard data transfer charges for the usage on SFO↔FRA. Alternatively, you can set the pricing to Tier 3 and cover both the SFO↔FRA and SFO↔IAD usage as part of flat-rate pricing, but for a higher hourly cost.
For a 100 Gbps port-pair at Tier 3, the list rate is $219.18 per hour. Over a full month (730 hours), this results in a charge of nearly $160,000.00 ($219.18 × 730 hours).
