Amazon Linux 2027 (AL2027), now in public preview, is the next version of Amazon Linux, purpose-built for cloud-native workloads that customers demand on AWS with performance, scale, and security in mind. Built on Fedora-based foundation which was the baseline for AL2023, AL2027 runs on kernel 7.1+ and is built to be secure by default, enabling SELinux in enforcing mode as default, accelerates cryptographic performance with AWS-LC, and keeps your builders current with the latest toolchains and language runtimes. For AI and machine learning workloads, it delivers access to accelerator drivers, including AWS Neuron driver support for Trainium and Inferentia instances. Amazon Linux 2023 (AL2023) is the next generation of Amazon Linux, ideal for general purpose workloads on AWS. AL2023 will be supported for five years after it is generally available. AL2023 locks to a specific version of the Amazon Linux package repository, giving you control over how and when you absorb updates. AL2023 also provides the ability to get frequent updates and comes with features to help you meet your compliance needs.
Amazon Linux 2 has reached its end-of-support (EOS) on 2026-06-30, and is no longer receiving standard security updates. Remaining on AL2 carries increasing risk as new vulnerabilities are no longer patched. Customers should migrate to Amazon Linux 2023 (AL2023) now rather than waiting for a future version. AL2023 offers enhanced security features including FIPS certification, modern package versions, improved performance, and is supported until June 2029.
