Backup and Disaster Recovery
Business continuity depends on the efficient, uninterrupted flow of data across an organization – from operations to sales to fulfillment. Build scalable, durable, and secure data-protection solutions with AWS
AWS Backup and Disaster Recovery Use Cases
Due to the exponential growth of data worldwide, designing and deploying backup solutions is more complicated than before. The International Data Corporation predicts global data will grow to 163 zettabytes by 2025, which is 10 times the amount of data generated in 2016.*
*Data Age 2025, IDC and Seagate, April 2017, https://www.seagate.com/www-content/our-story/trends/files/Seagate-WP-DataAge2025-March-2017.pdf
Traditional backup methods such as tape libraries cannot quickly scale to this growth and maintaining secondary standby sites can be prohibitively expensive.
With AWS services and APN Partner resources, customers can build and deploy a flexible and scalable backup infrastructure that protects all data types, including object, block, and file. Explore these use cases and AWS storage features that can help you build cost-optimized backup solutions.
Benefits of Backing up to AWS
Enhanced Data Durability and Availability
AWS's cloud storage solutions are designed to deliver increased durability of 99.999999999%, by synchronously storing your data across multiple facilities. Copies of every object are distributed across at least three physical Availability Zones that are miles apart within an AWS Region. Even when practicing industry best practices, on-premises capabilities cannot match AWS’ durability due to our global scale.
More Security with AWS than On-Premises
All AWS customers benefit from data centers and network architectures built to meet the requirements of the most security-sensitive organizations in the most regulated industries, such as Financial Services, Public Sector, and Healthcare. We offer services to manage account access, detect irregular activity, isolate DDoS attacks, encrypt data in transit and at rest, and perform audits. AWS also maintains numerous security assurance programs, which means segments of your compliance are already completed.
Access to the Latest Machine Learning and Analytics Tools
Another benefit of backing up to AWS is the access your backup data has to the latest cloud-native applications for artificial intelligence, machine learning (ML), analytics, and business intelligence. This means you can extract insights from data sets that in traditional backup architectures would sit idle until recovered for production.
Simple and DIY Solutions
AWS DataSync
If you have large Network Attached Storage (NAS) systems, you likely have a lot of files to protect—either with replication or backup to a second hardware stack. With AWS DataSync, you can replicate files into Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for online copies that you can archive to Amazon S3 Glacier with an Amazon S3 Lifecycle Management Policy. Or, you can send the data to Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) for a standby file system.

Cloud Connector
Many third-party backup services have built-in cloud connectors that can be enabled to send data backups to AWS without disruption to your organization's daily operations. If your current on-premises solution does not have built-in cloud connectors, you can use gateway services like AWS Storage Gateway to create a seamless connection between on-premises environments and AWS. During a restore, backup data is pulled back to the on-premises environment and reinstated for production. Below is a conceptual architecture of a hybrid cloud backup solution. Backups are generated on-premises where the backup master server is hosted and sent to AWS to be stored in Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) or archived in Amazon S3 Glacier. Customers can also work with providers from the AWS Partner Network (APN).
AWS Storage Competency Partners provide industry-leading consulting and technology services for a variety of use cases, including Backup & Restore operations to, from and within the AWS environment; Primary Storage using IP File or Block protocols and object storage; active and passive data Archiving capabilities; and Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery (BCDR) solutions.

AWS Storage Gateway
AWS Storage Gateway is a hybrid storage service that enables your on-premises applications to seamlessly use AWS cloud storage. You can use the service for backup and archiving, disaster recovery, cloud data processing, storage tiering, and migration. The service helps you reduce and simplify your datacenter and branch or remote office storage infrastructure. Your applications connect to the service through a virtual machine or hardware gateway appliance using standard storage protocols, such as NFS, SMB and iSCSI. The gateway connects to AWS storage services, such as Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Amazon Simple Storage Service Glacier (Amazon S3 Glacier), Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS), and AWS Backup, providing storage for files, volumes, snapshots, and virtual tapes in AWS. The service includes a highly-optimized data transfer mechanism, with bandwidth management, automated network resilience, and efficient data transfer, along with a local cache for low-latency on-premises access to your most active data

With AWS Storage Gateway, customers can retire physical tape libraries and replace them with durable and secure cloud-enabled storage capabilities. AWS Storage Gateway lets IT organizations transfer backup jobs from on-premises tape or virtual tape library systems to AWS without disrupting existing on-premises workflows. AWS Storage Gateway’s virtual tape library interface can help you update your backup infrastructure, reduce the need to transport storage media to and from offsite facilities, and eliminate upfront capital investments and resource maintenance of aging tape media.

Disaster Recovery with CloudEndure
A revolution in disaster recovery came with the advancement of cloud technology and the enormous growth of public cloud infrastructure, which allows you to pay only for the resources you use. In parallel, replication technologies evolved to leverage cloud infrastructure cost-effectively, forming a “perfect marriage” between DR and the cloud.
As a result, organizations can now achieve enterprise-grade DR at a dramatically lower cost than was previously possible. There are numerous cloud-based DR technology solution vendors. Top-of-the-line solutions provide enterprise grade recovery objectives, and agnostic protection for any application, workload, or database, without any impact on your source servers. When evaluating a DR solution, make sure to ask the right questions about the software capabilities and limitations, based on your environment details and recovery objectives.
Business continuity and IT resilience are a click away with CloudEndure® Disaster Recovery. Our one-touch disaster recovery solution utilizes block-level continuous replication, as well as highly automated machine conversion and orchestration, to ensure minimal RPO and RTO for all applications and to significantly reduce traditional disaster recovery expenses.
CloudEndure Disaster Recovery is available on AWS Marketplace as a SaaS Contract and a SaaS Subscription, which means AWS customers can sign up directly through their AWS accounts and start replicating machines straight away — no paperwork, no long-term commitment, no minimum number of machines
