You pay by the hour for a preconfigured Windows Server 2016 image that applies US STIG security profiles automatically. Pricing is usage-based, so you are billed only for the hours each instance runs. The many dimensions map to individual EC2 instance types, from small burstable sizes to large memory-, compute-, and storage-optimized options, including bare-metal and GPU instances. Your hourly rate depends on the instance type you choose, which reflects its compute, memory, and storage capacity. There are no tiers or add-ons; you select one instance type and scale by launching more or larger instances.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate for each instance type actually pay for beyond the compute?
You pay for a preconfigured Windows Server 2016 image that applies US STIG security profiles automatically. The software charge covers this hardened, compliance-ready operating system. The hourly rate reflects both the software and the compute, memory, and storage capacity of the instance type you launch.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or powered off?
Software charges apply per running instance-hour. When you stop or power off an instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the software itself meters only running time.
How do I scale up if one instance type no longer meets my needs?
There are no tiers or add-ons to upgrade. You pick one instance type per instance. To scale, you launch more instances or choose a type with more compute, memory, or storage. Each running instance bills at its own hourly rate.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
