Overview
Numerical Weather Prediction & Air Quality Modeling on Graviton4 with Odycloud provides a complete package to launch and manage WRF and CMAQ on AWS Graviton4. WRF is a mesoscopic model used by thousands of users worldwide, and able to generate forecasts for a wide range of atmospheric conditions and resolutions. These forecasts serve for operational functions and research purposes. CMAQ represents state-of-the-art air quality modeling able to forecast concentration of air pollutants such as ozone, particulate matters and other toxics. -Implementation of WRF v4.6 and WPS optimized for AWS Graviton4 instances and clusters providing an optimal balance between cost and performance -Implementation of CMAQ v5.5 optimized for AWS Graviton4 instances and clusters -Excellent scalability for clusters with Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) -Availability of NICE-DCV connection for high-performance remote display
Highlights
- Optimized installation of WRFv4.6 version for AWS Graviton4 processors and Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) networking
- Optimized installation of CMAQv5.5 version for AWS Graviton4 processors
- Dual AMI functionality for single instances and clusters, which can also be used with spot prices for substantial savings

64-bit (Arm) Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Version release notes
The new release (v6.0.0) of Numerical Weather Prediction & Air Quality Modeling on Graviton4 with Odycloud support upgrades the AMI to the latest version of AWS-parallelcluster (v3.11.0) while using Ubuntu 22.04 as the OS and the latest compiler versions. The apps are optimized for the 8th generation of EC2 instances powered by Graviton4 processors (c8g, m8g, r8g). The AMI includes WRF-ARW v4.6 and CMAQ v5.5 to perform air quality analysis. The CMAQ subdirectory holds 4 different compilations depending on the mechanism to be used: cb6r5_ae7_aq_m3dry, cb6r5_ae7_aq_stage, cracmm2_m3dry and cracmm2_stage. The AMI also includes the batch and input files to run the CRACMM2 and CB6R5_AE7 benchmarks for the 12NE3 domain.

Usage instructions
Full instructions on how to launch EC2 instances and clusters are available at https://odyhpc.com/aws_marketplace/ . Launching an instance running WRF is like launching other Linux-based instances as the connection requires ssh authentication. The username is 'ubuntu' and spot instances are available per the usual conditions. Launching a cluster requires the use of AWS-ParallelCluster and full instructions on how to use the AMI are available at https://odyhpc.com/aws_marketplace-wrf_cluster/ . The clusters also allow the use of spot prices for the compute instances, which can result in significant savings.
