One of the few software products I've used that provides a consistently good experience
What do you like best about the product?
pfSense is a feature-rich and very stable software firewall. We use pfSense on both commodity hardware and Netgate appliances; it works very well on both platforms.
It is available in both an open-source version and as a customized Netgate version; this opens the user base to a larger audience, a plus in a security product.

What do you dislike about the product?
Occasionally the package versions seem out of sync with the standalone versions of some packages.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We like an integrated firewall, router and VPN product

Reliable, feature rich and affordable for SMBs.
What do you like best about the product?
We use pfSense to guard our mission critical VoIP cluster in a remote lights-out data center. The reliability of its "CARP" feature helps us maintain near-zero downtime for our client's phone calls.
What do you dislike about the product?
Netgate does not provide a central management console for pfSense. Managing multiple installations, for example, requires manual remote access, version tracking, backup consolidation and statistic gathering.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The online support community provides both a quick reference for technical issues and an easy path to master the platform. This allows out business to provide a unique solution to our clients.
pfSense is ideal for any network demanding uptime and reliability.
What do you like best about the product?
Uptime is essential with networks we maintain, such as first responders, in addition to security. These requirements are met with no paywall for other features.
What do you dislike about the product?
Updates don't always go smoothly, sometimes requiring being physically present to reset, but support is excellent in those edge cases.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use pfSense to secure our networks, but it's robust enough to work well with almost any other device at endpoints we don't maintain.
The only firewall I would choose
What do you like best about the product?
The interface and menus are built to explain what each setting will do. Having the piece of mind that I can apply a change and what the outcome will be is priceless.
What do you dislike about the product?
Finding packages that enhance the features of pfSense can sometimes be difficult. A great deal of scrutiny is always good, since we are talking about a firewall, but having the more options would be great.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Connecting remote offices, securing internal networks, allowing secure remote management and overall making the user experience much more enjoyable when using the internet.
Everything just works!
What do you like best about the product?
The systems gives me full control, both to break and to fix things!
What do you dislike about the product?
There is the possibilty to break things to the point where you just need to start over all again.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Giving among other things giving awesome routing, packet filtering and a lot of QoL-services
Excellent Firewall Full of Features
What do you like best about the product?
It is a full-featured firewall that is completely adaptable and customizable for each use case. It is suitable for all uses, from a school district to small offices and enterprise solutions.
What do you dislike about the product?
There needs to be some sort of central management console to view all the firewalls you have deployed if you are a service provider. Having to come up with alternative solutions that do not entirely lend themselves to the ecosystem of the firewall appliance is not ideal.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It has been replacing expensive firewalls requiring the end user to purchase a license yearly just to use their product or services. I have been able to show my customers how pfSense can accomplish the same results for a fraction of the cost without the ongoing expenses.
Great Firewall, Great Price
What do you like best about the product?
Easy to use and understand, full training materials provided online to help even the newest of user setup the system and maintain. Regularly updated with the newest and best features.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing to note so far, does everything it should do. GUI could do with a little "glitter" to make it look like a 2023 product but that's not really important.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Allowing us to replace our aged fleet of UTM threat management and filtering solutions. Coming in at a price that is obtainable for Schools and Educational establishments. Latest VPN technology to replace our old IPSEC connections.
Excellent hardware, excellent support and service
What do you like best about the product?
Certified hardware that I KNOW is going to run pfSense well. Sure, I could build my own, but I'd rather spend my time configuring security and moving on to the next client, rather than tweak hardware and continually adjust settings for uptime and performance.
What do you dislike about the product?
Only downside that most would say would be the cost...but when I consider the hourly rate I charge clients and what my time is worth, I'm saving a ton!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Edge firewall and routing.
A fantastic, streamlined, no-nonsense experience, without any sacrifice at all.
What do you like best about the product?
PFSense provides an extremely feature-rich platform without any of the annoying licensing structures that you find with other firewall vendors. If you're willing to invest the small amount of time it takes to learn the PFSense platform, you can build an enterprise-grade next-generation firewall that matches the features of any of the major firewall vendors' offerings for nothing more than the cost of the hardware itself. Now that I am comfortable with PFSense, I can't see myself ever using another type of firewall in my environment.
What do you dislike about the product?
The main downside for me is that it does take a little bit of time to become familiar and comfortable with the tool, but even this is a minor quibble, since this is true of any technology. Since documentation is robust and freely available, the only cost is the time it takes to read and understand it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have a limited budget for implementing edge devices in our organization. Being open-source, PFSense is an essentially free way to meet ALL of our firewall needs.
Very pleased with the firewall
What do you like best about the product?
It is easy to install and setup, running in about 30 mimutes
What do you dislike about the product?
VPN setup not got working yet and seems different to others but then every firewall has different setup.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Used this to bond to FTTC connections so as to double the speed for the client
