I have been using pfSense for years as a low cost firewall to protect my business and home networks.
What do you like best about the product?
pfSense is easy to configure with it's setup wizard. Now with tailscale implemented in pfSense plus software configuration of a lightweight VPN based on Wireguard is simple. pfBlocker also allows you to stop ads at the firewall! All of this is great for a novice network administrator.
What do you dislike about the product?
Occasionally upgrading the software version corrupts the configuration which may require a reinstall and repeat setup. Upgrades require time to test and troubleshoot and one always needs to back up complicated configurations.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Tailscale implementation on pfSense is a game changer for setting up a Wireguard-based VPN. I can easily see behind four pfSense firewalls at different locations making network and computer management much quicker. Creating a private file server (private cloud) behind pfSense enhances security and privacy.

All the features you need for a network gateway
What do you like best about the product?
I like that it can run in a VM as well as on dedicated hardware. It's easy to install and you get a GUI to configure everything. The user interface is fairly intuitive and the feature set is very rich.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes the extra software modules are not quite up to quality standards of the main software. They tend to be a big buggy at times. Although the frr module works okay, I wish it was a bit more mature.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It works well for remote access and a point-to-point VPN. The OpenVPN implementation is very good and stable. Overall I've had very few support calls when using pfSense as a firewall and gateway.
Solid product
We're using pfsense in AWS for ~80 IPsec tunnels. Works well. Upgrades have been easy and the support team at pfsense have been supportive when we've had questions.
pfSense is the best
What do you like best about the product?
The stable firewall rules and powerful control mechanisms offered by pfSense have allowed us to manage internet access effectively and securely. One of the great things about pfSense is that it provides advanced features, such as creating and managing VPN connections for remote access, handling ACME Certificates and HAProxies, implementing load balancing and failover, and even creating custom captive portal pages for guest access. The web interface is user-friendly and intuitive, and the support community is always available and responsive. I highly recommend pfSense to anyone looking for a flexible and powerful firewall solution."
What do you dislike about the product?
For less experienced administrators, it can be a frustrating experience and may require a steep learning curve. While pfSense is a powerful and flexible firewall solution, it may not be the best fit for those lacking advanced networking skills."

Site Internet access and Remote Intranet access
Best SMB firewall solution hands down
What do you like best about the product?
I have been using pfsense since 2004 when it was monowall. It has changed greatly over the years and has added many enterprise features. It is affordable and scales well depending on the hardware it runs on.
We now have over 50 business customers using pfsense as their primary firewall. The only real problems we have had over the years are from hardware failures, but the software has always been rock solid, stable and secure.

What do you dislike about the product?
The only real issue I would like to see resolved is the backup and restore feature. It works great if you back up and restore the same (or at least the same model) hardware. However, if you are restoring to a system with different NIC's it can because a real pain in the backside as none of the interface names will match up properly. You then have to manually edit the config file with a text editor and change all of the interface names to it will work properly.
I would love to see a restore wizard that compares the backup file to the current hardware and makes it simple to match up the new interface names to the old ones.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use it as a primary firewall/NAT for most customers and secure VPN tunnels between sites, services and end users.
The packages you can install on it also allow for other significant use cases, such as web caching to HA load balancers.

What do you like best about the product?
The strengths of pfSense are its ability to run on various devices and its wide range of dedicated appliances. Also worth mentioning is good community support and the ability to install additional packages, making it a versatile solution.
What do you dislike about the product?
If something doesn't work, then searching for the source of the failure can be tedious. The inability to wrap firewall rules requires long scrolling and perceptiveness.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use pfSense both as a classic firewall and for VPN connections. Depending on the requirements, it works on various devices, including virtualized ones and performs well.
