Dynatrace is one of the best tools for monotiring JVM applications

  • May 26, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
A very handy tool to monitor application along its whole lifecycle from startup to shutdown. Also, the collected information are so detailed (e.g. method level or GC information) that we can spot easily problems like bottleneck or parts of the application that is the most heavy in terms of CPU or RAM footprint. Furthermore, it is even able to grab useful information (e.g. timers) from native code that can be packaged along with Java code.
What do you dislike about the product?
The need for deploying an agent on the same JVM as the application to be monitored. This means some special network ports have to be opened and if you're applications are deployed on a public cloud this will imply modifying the security groups. In the case the deployment is in premise then this will not be a problem.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I was part of a company that develops software for the financial sector, the application was developed in the J2EE specification. To be able to advice our customers for best setup, we evaluated many application monitoring tools available for the JVM. We did that in order to advice our clients on the best solution they could use to get a better understanding of the operational aspect of our application. Dynatrace was one of the tools that we advised our client to use if they had nothing already for Java applications monitoring.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Dynatrace may be not easy to setup but the benefit gained from deploying it is worth the pain. It centralise operational information in a single interface enabling effective investigations in case of issues that may occurs to monitored applications.

What do you like best about the product?
It provides our entire IT team a granular look at issues our end users may be having with running applications.
What do you dislike about the product?
The learning curve is not very intuitive. But once you get familiar with it, it is a great tool.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Problem solving with how are application are running including any latency in our network with response time.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I recommend Dynatrace. The cost is not cheap for the hardware, software, and training. But it is well worth it to improve the quality and the production of your end users.

Java Application Performance Nirvana

  • April 27, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
If you are running a Java application, this product is a must have. This product was able to pinpoint our performance problems in mere minutes. Past attempts to glean this information manually took teams of engineers several days/weeks to gather.
Relatively easy to install. User interface is fairly intuitive.
What do you dislike about the product?
The required number of servers/VMs to support this product are more than expected. Between collectors, indexers, and databases, we have about 8 servers per site dedicated to Dynatrace.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Tracking down performance issues within our Java applications. We have been able to pinpoint performance issues within minutes instead of spending weeks. In addition, we've been able to baseline our performance and track performance between releases.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Very powerful tool to have especially if you set it up before you have performance issues. It is also extremely helpful in finding performance issues before you go to market with your application. In addition, the User Experience Module/Manager allows you to see application performance starting at a user's browser all the way through the tiers of your application.

Dynatrace is a fantastic product for monitoring the performance flow of our entire suite of intercon

  • April 25, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It shows very clearly and obviously exactly what is going on, down to the line of code running on multiple different applications across multiple servers, regardless of how they talk to each other
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes there can be information overload and it takes experience to cut through that to find details
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Performance issues in a large, service oriented architecture spreading across dozens of load balanced services has become trivial instead of a nightmare

    Computer Software

Very good at what it does, navigation just requires ctrl-f.

What do you like best about the product?
It can track information that is transmitted between applications and users etc, this is great for finding where in your code it's causing the application to crash. This is very helpful for in house products and developing them further.
What do you dislike about the product?
On face value there is so much going on, this makes the product very overwhelming. It shows off the options and features available which is great but makes it much tougher to hone in on it's practical uses.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Preventing bottlenecks by examining the database statements and subsequently changing how searches etc are done and where in the code they occur.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Very expensive, would look at similar applications for development but would rather just use a network monitor to tell me if things are down.

An expensive top notch monitoring tool

  • April 01, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
its a top notch monitoring tool which provides great metrics from UX, mobile, usability. They have rich reporting capabilities with interactive interfaces
What do you dislike about the product?
Starting plan itself is pricey. Additional vertical offerings for application performance management, standalone synthetic monitoring, and data center RUM are not included.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Have a powerful monitoring tool that can provide detailed metrics across all platforms and channels.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Its definitely expensive but gives you a wider options in monitoring. If you are considering this, then your application monitoring is key for your business because even a small downtime or lack of insight means losing money in your domain. If that's not the reason, then may be you can look for a cheaper option

Dynatrace is faster and easy to implement

  • April 01, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I've only used Dynatrace for a while as a part of my project (shifted from Nagios) and I can say it's pretty easy to implement (from a first time user point of view).
The core technology of the product is its patented PurePath Technology which allows to trace every single transaction (like web request, batch jobs etc.) from end-to-end.
Dynatrace APM tools provide UI/UX analysis that identifies and resolves application performance issues faster than many other competitors used in software industry.
They have a great support for IBM technology and an excellent experience in the AIX space.
What do you dislike about the product?
We were working on banking projects and often used multiple server technologies including C++. Initial setup was straightforward while implementing Java and .net, but a bit complex in the case of C++. I felt if they could just facilitate the installation of the agent on server applications for various languages.

DynaTrace provides a more transaction level view(compared to largely aggregated view some APM provide) however, I would have loved if it would have provided more specifics like which part of the code/module is taking a long time to execute.

DynaTrace is way too expensive when compared to one of those top APM tools(like New Relic).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Other APM mainly focus on monitoring systems, infrastructure and networks whereas Dynatrace is a whole lot more complex and far more developed for the kind of projects we deal with.
It is also monitoring your whole infrastructure and with that set of informations(you provide) and that let you to figure out if there are any application performance problems especially if they're related to infrastructure, server, code, database or any other tier.
The best feature that helped with our business is that there were
• No Stability issues
• No Scalability issues
• Executing performance testing and supervising the application response with Dynatrace, then collaborate with developers to solve issues.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
• AIX Java stack on Dynatrace is obviously a crowd pulling aspect.
• Dynatrace is a SaaS APM solution based on hundreds of man-years of experience which monitors complex environments(leveraging AI).
• They have an excellent support for IBM technology.
