Agile in how to onboard the team, regardless of how mature the teams are.
What do you like best about the product?
Support & Service and Column Level Lineage
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes the application is slow, but that is probably our fault because we have very bad design & too many tables.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Source of truth, documenting baseline information and showing how our data is connected, helping us resolve issues faster.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This tool quickly allows you to understand where your data is located and get your arms around how to make it an asset for the company.

Does a better job than what Fortune 500 companies can build
What do you like best about the product?
- Being able to see column popularity and popular joins and queries
- Great customer service
- Seeing all tables in a schema easily

- Seeing all tables in a schema easily
What do you dislike about the product?
- Slightly slow search and load times
- No comprehensive way to add valid values, except to the field description itself
- Still a relatively new product, so new features are being added

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Data table, schema, and data field documentation. Knowing who to contact about tables.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Consider the number of tables, views, and users you'll need to support, and check this against Select Star's pricing plans.
Great tool for discovering data. Easy to document and find table/column definition.
What do you like best about the product?
UI is super intuitive - easy to search for tables or columns and find the data you need. Can also find commonly used queries and how to join tables together.
What do you dislike about the product?
New schema does not always pop up automatically - sometimes have to ping the support team to add it manually.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Select Star solves the data discoverability issue, which could be a big issue especially when the team grows and the amount of tribal knowledge grows.
Easy to edit, easy to search, a bit slow to navigate.
What do you like best about the product?
Pros:
- Easy to search: can search by both table and column names. Can view how popular a given column is by popularity. Can see how different tables and variables are connected.
- Easy to edit: users can doubleclick into table and column descriptions to update descriptions

What do you dislike about the product?
Cons:
- Slow to load and to navigate: when searching for tables and columns, the recommendations take a while to populate. Uncertain if this is due to issues with the backend on our side or with Selectstar.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Selectstar allows users of our data warehouse to record what would otherwise be tribal knowledge and trivializes the sharing of information.
Nearly all the data discovery needs met
What do you like best about the product?
- each table's info and column description can be edited without having to update a yaml
- better search for Mode than Mode itself
- lineage for individual tables and columns used in queries, it's very helpful to find common ways to use the data
- easy system to claim tables, add details, tags, etc. doesn't feel bureaucratic by design.
- friendly support for issues and has a mechanism to upvote product suggestions

What do you dislike about the product?
- right clicking columns leads you to lineage page when you just want to copy to clipboard
- URL pattern uses table IDs instead of db names, table names, and column names. If a colleague shares a link with you, you will not know what it's for, and you cannot just alter a URL to get to the right subpage
- lack of sample data for each table, leading to needing to query it to preview data or find an existing example query

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- Human-friendly data table discovery --> Can find the right Snowflake tables in a more readable format + has so much more context per column
- Human-friendly Mode report discovery --> Can find more relevant reports faster than native Mode search + has so much more context per report
- Knowing which column to use based on Popularity indicator --- many tables have columns that sound similar but are not the same. Popularity is a quick way to validate which one is 'correct' for the most typical use cases.
- Common joins, column/table lineage, query discovery --> Can better construct queries by seeing examples by the rest of the company and ideate a little faster for the next project by having examples, and know which dashboards/queries a table update will impact

Frequent user of select star
What do you like best about the product?
crowd sourced information on data fields when looking at new data tables, able to see which tables/data fields are most popular
What do you dislike about the product?
not able to see audit trail of descriptions (eg can't see when last updated / who updated to ensure if the description is up to date or correct)
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
data exploration, maintain SOT info of data tables, enable people who are unfamiliar with data tables to quickly ramp up
Data Cataloguing, Discoverability and Governance on steroids using Select Star
What do you like best about the product?
Select Star provides a great variety of tools and integrations for Data Discovery and Cataloguing, with a high sophistication level. The main features that I found the most helpful for my everyday work are:
1. The multilevel search on tables, columns, schemas, tags etc, multiple sources (Snowflake, Tableau)
2. The Column level lineage views.
3. The automated integration with Snowflake for documentation purposes.
4. A very simple process for tagging multiple resource objects such as columns, tables, and dashboards.
5. The ability to choose which source object I want to sync with Select Star, and which I don't.

What do you dislike about the product?
Since Select star is a recently established Start-up that is trying to take a share in a very antagonistic market, it's inevitable to have a lot of space for improvement. From my point of view, the section that I would like to invest more in is the APIs. Currently, there is a big variety of functionalities and feature which is exposed from their APIs but I believe it needs a redesign, in terms of API Standards and Authentication and Authorization, in order to be safer and easier for a partner to integrate multiple automated processes with Select Star.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The most critical business demand that we are using Select Star for is the centralization and exposure of the Data Documentation. Since Orfium wants to apply Data Mesh principles to their main Products, Data Cataloguing and Documentation were the major requirements for us to succeed in this endeavor.
Furthermore, Select Star has been used for critical components related to Data Governance by applying Business and Technical Ownership to schemas, tables, and columns, as also multi-tagging them with the current statuses and the categories they belong to.

So far so good!
What do you like best about the product?
1. Data Lineage across systems
2. Popular joins/queries which allows for self-serve discoverability
3. Documentation

3. Documentation
What do you dislike about the product?
It seems to crash a lot, or pages are unavailable/broken due to technical issues.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We never had a solution for data lineage prior to select star. This solves it very nicely.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Go through the trial and understand whether it meets the company's needs.
Best Data Catalogue I've Used!
What do you like best about the product?
One feature that I love about Select Star is the "Popular Joins" view, which shows you how tables are commonly joined to other tables, in addition to the join keys. Super helpful for understanding how to use the data and minimize errors!
What do you dislike about the product?
It can sometimes be a bit slow to load when you're searching or navigating between pages, but it doesn't affect the usability at all. It's still pretty performant overall.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Select Star is really helpful for allowing us to document our tables, helping people navigate our data model, and tracking lineage to understand how our data flows from one table to another.
A Great Data Catalog for your Modern Data Platform
What do you like best about the product?
Select Star is a great data catalog that helps us discover our most important data. The best parts are the seamless integration with Snowflake (our use case) and the support from Select Star's team. Furthermore, Select Star is a fully interoperable tool, it has an API that anyone can utilize to insert/extract information, and it automatically maps the documentation from the source. Last but not least, Select Star is cheap for what it offers, and the team is always there to help with your specific needs.
What do you dislike about the product?
So far, there isn't anything I dislike. There is a constant development of features that cover more and more needs, but the most important features of a Data Catalog are already there.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Select star is our primary data discovery service, and it has enabled us to build a map around our data and their dependencies. It also helps us identify how our datasets are being used and connected.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This is a value-for-money service that will cover your Data Discovery needs.
