What is an ISV?

An independent software vendor (ISV) is a company that creates and sells software products to suit a range of customers. The software solution typically solves a specific customer problem, such as creating and managing sales or financial data. Solutions also include infrastructure management software that supports functions such as data storage, security, or authentication. The vendor often builds software compatible with a wide range of hardware and operating systems (OSs) to target a broad customer base.

How does an independent software vendor operate?

An ISV builds and distributes targeted software solutions to specific market segments, such as healthcare, retail, and energy. These software apps are created to address a specific industry, use case, or business problem.

For example, CRM software helps companies streamline their customer journey mapping. How do independent software vendors differ from other types of software manufacturers?

What is the difference between ISV and SaaS?

Software as a Service (SaaS) is a cloud-based software delivery model. SaaS applications run on remote servers in the cloud, delivering services to end-users over the internet through an internet browser or dedicated app. In SaaS software licensing, customers typically pay for the functionality they use as a subscription model.

SaaS refers to the software itself, while ISV refers to the organization selling software. ISVs can sell SaaS solutions. “Born in the Cloud” ISVs typically provide software as SaaS and run their applications in the cloud. On-premises deployments still exist. However, SaaS has become the predominant software delivery model for many enterprise applications.
