How Deloitte uses AWS Migration Hub Journeys to Plan More Efficient Migrations to AWS

Organizations of all sizes and across all industry sectors are migrating and modernizing their IT workloads to the cloud, which can provide significant benefits. These include cost savings through right-sizing and optimization, improvements in operational resilience, greater agility, and improved staff productivity. In this post, we will explore why Deloitte chose AWS Migration Hub Journeys, a new capability of AWS Migration Hub. We will discuss Deloitte’s initial pilot using Migration Hub Journeys, including specific features leveraged and their strategic goals for using Migration Hub Journeys to drive benefits for their end customers. By examining Deloitte’s experience, you will gain insights into how to utilize Migration Hub Journeys to streamline and optimize cloud migration initiatives in your organizations.
Deloitte’s Introduction to Migration Hub Journeys
As a leader in design and implementation of large-scale migrations and modernizations, Deloitte Consulting assists its customers to migrate workloads to AWS to realize cost efficiencies, agility and innovation benefits. Deloitte embraced the value proposition of AWS Migration Hub Journeys. Compared to project management tools such as Jira, a key differentiator of Migration Hub Journeys is that it’s tailored for migration-specific tasks and tightly integrated with AWS’s ecosystem of core services, streamlining the migration process. Migration Hub Journeys provides the capability through several migration templates to customize specific tasks when moving workloads to AWS.
The collaboration between Deloitte and AWS Migration Hub Journeys started in Q2 2023 when AWS introduced this capability to Deloitte through technical enablement sessions. Deloitte’s cloud practitioners were onboarded with access to the Migration Hub Journeys console, allowing them to test the capability and provide feedback. Prior to this, Deloitte was using third-party tools like Jira to track customer cloud migrations, but was seeking a single, consolidated tool that could:
- Enable collaboration between all parties involved in the migration process.
- Provide guidance on best practices and tools for migration.
- Offer a task orchestration platform to manage the entire migration journey to AWS.
AWS Migration Hub Journeys resonated with Deloitte’s cloud delivery team who were working with a large insurance customer. They were convinced that Migration Hub Journeys could provide the necessary capabilities to support the end-to-end cloud migration to AWS. To validate this, Deloitte performed a pilot within customer’s lower environment, such as Development and Staging on AWS. They were satisfied that Migration Hub Journeys could effectively navigate the complexities of the customer’s enterprise-level environments running on the AWS platform.
Key Migration Hub Journeys Features Used
Deloitte’s migration team used Migration Hub Journeys for a large insurance customer based in the US. The following features were leveraged for this purpose:
Migration Templates
Deloitte used the general migration template available within AWS Migration Hub Journeys collection of specialized workload-based templates. As a cloud migration implementation partner, Deloitte’s role was to help the end customer in migrating approximately 200 on-premises applications to AWS.

Collaboration
Deloitte was able to facilitate collaboration between the insurance customer and AWS users, providing a unified view for executing the end-to-end migration journey.

Task Orchestration
AWS Migration Hub Journeys capabilities and feature sets allowed Deloitte to demonstrate how customers can create customized templates. This included the ability to add and track various tasks, along with their dependencies and assigned users. Migration Hub Journeys also provided a single dashboard that met all project management requirements for efficiently orchestrating cloud migrations.

Next Steps and Future Goals
Deloitte is eager to leverage AWS Migration Hub Journeys to help their customers manage large-scale, complex enterprise-grade migrations to AWS. Deloitte is actively identifying and working with their customers to use AWS Migration Hub Journeys to accelerate migrations to AWS.
As a next step, the insurance customer plans to complete the migration in multiple phases, including portfolio discovery/assessment and Wave 1 applications migration. The first target is slated for completion within the next quarter. This initial phase will include the migration of 30 applications across three environments. The remaining applications will be migrated throughout the next year.
Conclusion
Through this migration project, Deloitte was able to demonstrate the value and potential of AWS Migration Hub Journeys. The service provides robust capabilities for migrating workloads to AWS. Moreover, with the planned future enhancements to Migration Hub Journeys, Deloitte foresees the migration process becoming even more streamlined and straightforward for their customers.. The service brings in a lot of value for Deloitte in carrying out larger and complex migrations to AWS for its customers, albeit in a simpler and an effective.
