AWS Public Sector Summit in Singapore: The Next-Generation of Builders

The second annual AWS Public Sector Summit in Singapore took place on Tuesday, October 2, at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Center in Singapore. More than 1,100 attendees showed up from across the public sector. The event kicked off with the keynote presentation and was followed by 17 sessions that were offered across two tracks. And, for the first time, there was also a student track.

Next-Generation of Builders

Peter Moore, General Manager for Asia Pacific and Japan for AWS provided a business update on AWS. Tricia Davis-Muffett, Director of Public Sector Marketing for AWS Worldwide Public Sector, delivered the keynote, which focused on the next generation of builders and innovating for public good.

Tricia was joined onstage by a few of our customers who shared how they are building on AWS.

  • Kendrick Lee, Deputy Director, Digital Identity Program, GovTech, talked about their National Digital Identity program. This program is the cornerstone of Singapore’s Smart Nation vision and gives a unique digital identity for every resident in Singapore. GovTech cited an 80% reduction in transaction time for government services and they expect to have at least 160 services available by the end of 2018, including banking, loan, and credit approvals.
  • Dr. Sang-Ho Yun, Disaster Response Lead, Advanced Rapid Imaging & Analysis (ARIA) Team, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, discussed how they are improving data sharing and increasing insights around natural disasters by collecting, compiling and analyzing data across many sources including radar sensors, GPS networks, seismic networks, and optical sensors. Through analyzing these various data sources, the goal is to provide the people impacted by natural disasters with the information that they need to stay safe, and local officials the data they need to allocate their resources most effectively during a crisis.
  • Dr. Matthew Berryman, Chief Executive Officer, Across the Cloud Pty Ltd, is working with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) to build a platform on AWS called REACH. The platform is designed to support a project called PetaBencana.id, which provides improved information management in emergencies and fosters more efficient decision-support during disasters. The ability to combine real-time crowd-sourced information (including social media and relevant RSS feeds with advanced services like Amazon Rekognition) helps equip first responders with “virtual eyes” on the ground.

Throughout the keynote and sessions, the theme of making data available to those who need it most, in real-time, continued to show up in our customer stories. Hear from more of our customers to get inspired about using technology for good.
