Supporting quantum computing research at Israeli universities
While quantum computing continues to advance through scientific discovery and engineering innovation, the field still faces formidable challenges. Collaboration between industry and academia for quantum computing research is important. Expertise from multiple domains is needed to solve specific problems facing technology firms, and the collaboration fosters a richer environment for education.
In this post, I share two AWS efforts to advance quantum computing research with universities in Israel. These efforts underscore AWS’s commitment to work with academia to address the hardest challenges in quantum technologies and to democratize access to quantum technologies.
Researching quantum gates with Hebrew University of Jerusalem
First, the AWS Center for Quantum Computing is funding research by a group at The Racah Institute of Physics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Professor Alex Retzker of the Hebrew University and the AWS Center for Quantum Computing leads the group. This research will focus on advancing the design of quantum gates – the building blocks of quantum computing circuits. Building robust quantum gates is a central problem in the realization of scalable quantum computers. Improving quantum gate accuracy helps to lower the overhead cost of quantum error correction and extend the power of near-term quantum computers.
The Hebrew University’s Racah Institute has 45 faculty members who teach and carry out research in the fields of astrophysics, condensed matter, high-energy physics, bio and non-linear physics, nuclear physics, and atomic, molecular, and optical physics. The field of quantum technologies is especially active at the Hebrew University where 26 researchers in the various fields of quantum science teamed up to create the Quantum Information Science Center.
Supporting independent quantum computing research with Amazon Braket
Second, through the AWS Cloud Credit for Research Program, AWS is supporting independent research using Amazon Braket at the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Technion Israel Institute of Technology, Bar-Ilan University, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Amazon Braket provides secure access to quantum computers built with different technologies for researchers in academia, government and industry. As a fully integrated part of the AWS Cloud, Amazon Braket enables research organizations to explore quantum, classical high-performance computing (HPC), and quantum-inspired approaches to problems from the same console.
