Students attend community colleges for multiple reasons. Sometimes they drop out—for reasons that aren’t always entirely clear. Now, one of the largest community college districts in the country is determined to not only get a clearer picture but do something about it. Kern Community College District (KCCD) district in California is partnering with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to design and build a student-centered course planning tool to support the district’s Guided Pathways model.

Career and Technology Education (CTE) programs like architecture, design, and digital editing can require significant computing power and high-end graphics cards. While many schools across the US provide students with laptops to provide access to web-based applications, these laptops often don’t have the computing power to support these types of programs. The East Central Ohio Educational Service Center (East Central Ohio ESC) addresses this issue for central east Ohio schools by using AWS. With the cloud, East Central Ohio ESC helps school districts save thousands of dollars, and in one case up to a million, providing students and teachers with the computing resources they need to succeed in their classes from anywhere.

The undergraduate students from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) didn’t just build a race car from scratch—they built a world-record-holding solar electric race car: the Sunswift 7. In three years, they engineered everything from the aerodynamic design to the software used to run the car. After going live with their telemetry system on AWS, the racing team set a new Guinness World Record for the World’s Fastest Electric Vehicle going over 1,000km (621 miles) on a single charge.

As student enrollment begins to stabilize at colleges and universities, higher education leaders are focused on supporting equitable access to postsecondary education. Many leaders are turning to technology to address systemic barriers to education by making services more transparent, efficient, and simple for learners and staff. Together with AWS, Highline College’s financial aid department created a key tool that helped eliminate one such barrier.

EdIndia Foundation is an Indian nonprofit organization whose mission is to create innovative solutions that impact the quality of education at scale. EdIndia’s research showed that between the ages of 8–11, there is a stark difference in learning outcomes of students taught by high-performing teachers compared with low-performing teachers. EdIndia saw an opportunity to address this problem using AWS.

At National University (NU), a California-based university serving a high proportion of military and adult learners, the COVID-19 pandemic drove an increase in student requests for support. With nearly 20,000 in-classroom and online students nationwide, offering quality support during the pandemic was challenging. NU worked with ConcernCenter, an AWS Partner, to develop customized and scalable mental wellness support options for their students.

Deloitte’s Smart Factory Believers program was established as The Smart Factory @ Wichita’s purpose mission and is a collaborative initiative that brings together world-leading organizations, including AWS, Elenco Electronics, the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI), and others, to help foster new learning opportunities for middle school-aged children in underserved communities. Today, Deloitte and AWS announced an expansion of the program to the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS). Within the next three years, Smart Factory Believers aims to impact more than 1,600 students in the DC metro area.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the number one cause of death for student athletes and the leading cause of death on school campuses. The nonprofit Who We Play For (WWPF) advocates for SCA prevention through advocacy, automated external defibrillator (AED) placement, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training, and heart screenings, which include low-cost electrocardiogram (ECG) screenings from physicians that are experts in pediatric ECG interpretation. To scale their efforts, WWPF collaborated with AWS to build a ML solution to help extend the chance to get screened for SCA to every young person, potentially saving many lives each year.

US schools are doing their best to support students, but with staffing shortages and additional challenges exacerbated by the widespread disruption in teaching and learning, the education community needs solutions to help with recovery. Students also need help available to them when they need it, and that may not fall within the hours of the school day. AWS Partner, Gaggle, is an education technology (EdTech) company that delivers solutions that focus on helping to keep students safe. Gaggle developed ReachOut, a mental health hotline built on AWS that connects K12 students to trained Gaggle support counselors, anywhere, anytime.
